Swing Into Success: Make Golf Your Thing Kickstarts 2024 HBCU Partnership Tour

Industry representatives travel to several HBCUs to build awareness, relationships and expand access to careers in golf with students and administrationPonte Vedra Beach, FL – Make Golf Your Thing, a collaborative industry movement, is continuing to build relationships and foster greater access and inclusivity in the sport through events at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Under the banner “Make Golf Your Career,” several golf industry talent recruiting representatives will be on site at HBCUs in the coming weeks to directly engage students in discussions about working in the $102B golf industry.

Industry representatives visited Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. last week and are visiting Texas Southern University in Houston on March 26 and Paul Quinn College in Dallas on April 9. Additional HBCUs will be identified for events later this Spring and during the Fall 2024 Semester. The events include meetings between golf industry representatives and university leaders, as well as an activation for students, inviting them to come and learn more about internships and careers in the golf industry.

Make Golf Your Thing industry movement works to accelerate golf’s evolution in welcoming more people from historically underrepresented backgrounds to the industry, shedding light on the extensive opportunities the industry provides across the U.S. In 2023, Make Golf Your Thing supported a career day at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala., and partnered with four additional universities to install golf simulators on campus as a way to stimulate interest in golf. The effort is part of the White House Initiative on HBCUs.

“We are grateful that the HBCU leaders are welcoming the golf industry to their campuses and inviting us to meet the students as we aim to strengthen our industry through greater diversity,” said Dr. Michael Cooper, the USGA’s Senior HBCU Initiative Advisor and a co-chair of Make Golf Your Career’s HBCU effort. “We hope the relationships and inroads we are forging to the very capable talent that exists at HBCUs will create opportunities for students as well as the golf industry.”

Course Management https://seniorgolfdigest.com/2023/10/09/course-management/ https://seniorgolfdigest.com/2023/10/09/course-management/#respond Mon, 09 Oct 2023 19:41:00 +0000 https://seniorgolfdigest.com/?p=70 Read More]]>

No, we’re not talking about how high the fairway grass should be or the amount of sand that should be in the bunker. We’re talking about how you’re playing your game and maybe even how to cut a stroke or three. How, you ask? I reply, by playing the hole in reverse! That, my friends, is the idea behind course management.

Here’s a simple example. Let’s say that you’re playing a par 4 hole that’s 260 yards. You know that you can hit a drive somewhere between 190 and 210 yards depending on certain variables. You also know that your high percentage go to club is your pitching wedge which you can hit 90 yards with a great trajectory and fairly on target all day long. So then, subtract 90 from 260. That leaves you with 170 yards. Why then would you hit it 200 and then go for the next 60 with a club that may not give you the same confidence (real or imagined) as your pitching wedge?

It’s not only okay, but also wise, to break out let’s say a 3 wood and tee it off from there. You end up around the 170 mark and, Bingo! you pull old faithful out of the bag, step up to the ball with the confidence that you have already established with that shot, and watch it fly high and plop down on the green. Make sense? Yes, there will be those in your group that can drive the ball and get it within ten or fifteen yards of the green. But, have they developed the confidence to flop shot it 10 yards and land it soft enough not to run to the other side? Even if they do, you both got there in two. Once again, the short game is the great equalizer.

On average a Champions Tour player hits their drive around 268 yards depending on which study you reference. On average I hit my drive around 195 yards give or take 5 yards or so (unless I really skull it and hit a worm burner 40 yards!). Yes, I’m basically a short hitter and I’m fine with that. I almost always get out driven but, more often than not, I’m usually in the fairway or pretty close to it. This means that the above example is pretty much how I play my game. It also means that I may need three shots to get to the green instead of two for the simple reason that I like to take the high percentage shot. Remember, as someone once told me, ‘the woods are full of long hitters!’

So where else does the course management concept come into play? How about knowing whether to lay up or try to make it over the stream? Or maybe how to avoid the bunkers by hitting right before it instead of trying to clear it and then aiming for the spot from where you can have the confidence to hit the green? Maybe to set up the correct angle to the pin on a dogleg? I’m sure that you can think of a specific hole or two that you may be able to cut a stroke on by looking at it from the reverse. Start at the hole, work out how far you need to come back in order to use your best club, then back it up to the tee taking into consideration any hazards or obstacles between you and that money shot.

If you haven’t played this way before let me tell you, it’s not easy. If you’re used to stepping up and letting it rip every shot or if you see someone in your group make a shot that you ‘think’ you can duplicate; then this will be a slow process. But that’s okay! Just start by trying it on one hole and see how it turns out. Even if it only works once, well, that’s one less stroke on your scorecard isn’t it?

Make sure to share with us how you already, or are going to, apply course management to your round!

Play well,

Roseann

LIV GOLF ORLANDO – ROUND TWO https://seniorgolfdigest.com/2023/04/01/liv-golf-orlando-round-two-notes/ https://seniorgolfdigest.com/2023/04/01/liv-golf-orlando-round-two-notes/#respond Sat, 01 Apr 2023 20:34:00 +0000 https://seniorgolfdigest.com/?p=337 Read More]]>

BY LIV GOLF STAFF

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Brooks Koepka has 16 professional wins in eight different countries, but he’s never won an elite event in his home state of Florida.

That could change Sunday at LIV Golf Orlando.

Koepka, the Smash GC captain, shot his second consecutive 6-under 65 to grab the 36-hole individual lead at 12 under at Orange County National. He’ll take a three-shot lead over Torque GC’s Sebastián Muñoz, the first-round leader who followed his record-tying 62 with an even-par 71. Three players – Laurie Canter (Cleeks GC), Mito Pereira (Torque GC) and Patrick Reed (4Aces GC) – are at 8 under.

Fueled by Koepka, Smash leads the team competition at 26 under, two shots ahead of Torque, with Cleeks another three shots back at 21 under.

Koepka, who grew up in the West Palm Beach area, played collegiately at Florida State, and currently lives in South Florida, wasn’t sure of the last time he won a golf tournament in the state.

“Probably a minor league golf event I remember playing in like 2012, 2013,” he said.

His family is attending LIV Golf Orlando this week, cheering for both Brooks and his younger brother Chase, who also plays for Smash. It could be a big celebration if Brooks and his team can claim both trophies on Sunday.

“They’ve got to be loving it, right?” Koepka said of his family. “I’ll speak for me, it’s pretty cool to have my brother, playing alongside him, being able to go do practice rounds, playing an event with him, seeing all the behind-the-scenes stuff that you guys might not see all the time and be able to spend more time with him, more QT. I think that’s been a big thing. It’s been pretty dope.”

Koepka will also be seeking his second LIV Golf individual title, having won last year in a playoff against then-teammate Peter Uihlein in the LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah. Including the 2022 Invitational Series, the first nine regular-season events in LIV Golf’s young history have been won by nine different players, so Koepka is in position to be the first individual to celebrate a second time atop the podium.

“It’s kind of tough to have multiple wins in nine events,” Koepka said. “If you do, you’re doing something right.”

Muñoz was one of 18 players in the 48-player field who did not break par Saturday. He realizes how difficult it is to back up a low round with another one, especially in the windy conditions offered by the Crooked Cat course. Despite the even-par score, he remains in contention in just his third LIV Golf start.

“I felt like my ball-striking was the same as yesterday,” Muñoz said. “I might have hit a few less fairways. Putts didn’t go in, and that’s a nine-shot difference. Pretty crazy.”

Canter is making his third start as a reserve player filling in for Cleeks GC Captain Martin Kaymer, who is close to returning from offseason wrist surgery.

“I kind of look at it like if this is the last LIV event I ever play, then it’s been awesome,” Canter said. “… I haven’t tried to put too much pressure on myself in terms of got to take the opportunity because golf doesn’t really work like that. Well, not for me anyway.”

TEAM COUNTING SCORES

Here are the standings and counting scores for Saturday’s second round of the team competition at LIV Golf Orlando. The three best scores from each team count in every round for their total team score. The team with the lowest cumulative score after three rounds wins the team title.

NOTES

LESS MENTAL MISTAKES FOR KOEPKA: 36-hole leader Brooks Koepka finished outside the points in his first two LIV Golf starts of 2023 (31st in Mayakoba, 29th in Tucson). Now he’s on the verge of his second LIV win this week in Orlando. The difference? “Just got rid of the mental mistakes,” he said. “I look back, Mexico, I felt like I was playing pretty well, just made dumb mistakes. Then go to Tucson and I played the tough holes really well and played the easy holes probably the worst in the field.” As for this week? “Just making sure I miss on the correct side, giving myself chances, don’t take too much on,” he said. “And it’s worked.”

REED LURKING 4 SHOTS BEHIND: 4Aces GC star Patrick Reed enters Sunday within striking distance of the lead after posting consecutive 4-under 67s. Reed is looking for his first LIV Golf individual win. “Game is trending, just need to eliminate a little bit of mental mistakes,” he said. “I’ve had too many of those so far this week.” Two weeks ago in Tucson, Reed moved up the leaderboard with a 5-under 66 to finish T18. “I like Sundays,” Reed said.

CANTER’S HEALTH AND NEW DRIVER: Cleeks GC’s Laurie Canter attributes two things to his improved play this week – a healthy back and a new driver. He said back issues hampered his performance to start 2023, but that he finally started feeling better in Tucson. He’s also put a new driver in play this week to battle the windy conditions. Through two rounds, Canter has hit nearly 65% of his fairways, ranking him in the top half of the field in driver accuracy. “My previous driver was good, straight, but a little bit spinny,” he said, “whereas this driver is a bit flatter and we’ve had two windy days and it’s got me in the fairway a little bit more.”

WILL SMASH SET TEAM RECORD: Brooks Koepka and his Smash GC team have recorded the low team counting scores in each of the first two days, shooting a cumulative 12 under on Saturday to go with Friday’s opening 14 under. That leaves Smash at 26 under through the two rounds. They’ll need to go even lower on Sunday to break the team scoring mark set last season in Bangkok by Fireballs GC, who won at 45 under.

FIRST-ROUND LEADERS BREAK EVEN: Sebastián Muñoz (Torque GC) and Richard Bland (Cleeks GC), the top two players on the leaderboard entering the second round, both shot even-par 71. The two were the only players in the top 13 through two rounds who failed to break par on Saturday. Neither of their scores counted for their respective teams. The field stroke average in the second round was 69.625, approximately a half-stroke higher than the opening round.

TORQUE TEAM HOUSE: Three members of Torque GC are staying in the same house this week – captain Joaquin Niemann, Muñoz and David Puig. The other member, Mito Pereira, is spending this week with his family. “The vibe is great,” Muñoz said. “… Everyone has kind of his role. Everyone knows how to be part of the community and not really be the center of it.” Muñoz said his role is as the group’s listener. “Some people like to vent out, and I’ll listen and try to help out a little bit.”

HV3’S COUNTING STREAK ENDS (ON A TECHNICALITY): RangeGoats GC’s Harold Varner III entered Saturday having provided a counting score for his team in each regular-season round since joining LIV Golf last season. The 19 consecutive counting scores – the longest active streak in LIV Golf – came to an end on Saturday as Varner shot a 1-over 72. At least technically, it came to end. Varner’s score was matched by captain Bubba Watson’s 72, but Watson’s score counted.

Golf Heritage Society to Present Zoom Talks FeaturingStephen Proctor, Shirley SporkFor Immediate Release

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (November 1, 2021) – The Golf Heritage Society (GolfHeritage.org) will host two new Zoom talks in November. Stephen Proctor, renowned author, and Shirley Spork, one of the original founders of the LPGA’s teaching division, will be featured. Proctor’s presentation will take place on Wednesday, November 3. The Zoom talk with Spork will be two weeks later, on Wednesday, November 17. Both will begin at 7:00 p.m. EST. And both will be open to the public – a GHS first.

“We are delighted to present these two extraordinary speakers as a part of the GHS Grand Zoom Series,” said Dr. Bern Bernacki, the Society’s president. “These interactive engagements with Stephen and Shirley will certainly enrich the GHS mission to honor and preserve golf’s history.”

Proctor is a retired award-winning journalist and the author of “Monarch of the Green: Young Tom Morris: Pioneer of Modern Golf,” published in 2019. “The Long Golden Afternoon,” to be published in 2022, tells the story of the formative age of golf before the Great War.

Spork, a former professional golfer, was recognized as LPGA Teacher of the Year in 1959 and 1984. She served as the LPGA’s T&CP chairperson for eight years.

Edinburgh, UK – May 24, 2021 – With tens of thousands of golfers across 100 countries usingShot Scope GPS Smart watches to track their game performance, Michael Sember, an Air Force and resident of The Villages in Florida, was the lucky individual who recorded the Company’s 100 millionth shot. Shot Scope (www.shotscope.com), a leading international manufacturer of GPS-based golf management systems, including the award-winning V3 Smart Golf Watch, is celebrating the milestone shot by presenting Sember with a $1,000 gift voucher, courtesy of Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company, to spend on a variety of products at www.benhogangolf.com.

    Michael Sember

Sember, 77, a 28-year Air Force Veteran who flew the F-4 and the F-15 fighters in Vietnam, started his golf journey just five years ago at age 72. He was playing at Bonifay Golf and Country Club at The Villages when he recorded the 100 Millionth Shot Scope shot while wearing his V3 Smart Watch and hitting his 3rd shot out of a fairway bunker on Par 5 using a 24-degree hybrid club.

“That happened to be one of my better shots of the day,” said Sember. “I only started playing golf 5 years ago and I continually strive to get better and using Shot Scope gives me excellent feedback on my shortcomings.”

“It is hard to put into words what this 100 million shot milestone means for Shot Scope as a company, and we want to thank Michael Sember, as well as every one of our more than 50,000 golfers who helped us reach this historic mark in performance tracking,” said David Hunter, CEO, Shot Scope. “Capturing golfer swing data is the key to helping players see rapid improvement and thanks to the tracking capabilities of our smart golf watches, thousands of players have reduced their handicaps.”

In addition to helping golfers lower their scores, the data captured by Shot Scope has enabled the Company to create a wealth of information that highlights where golfers are trending with shot making and how they manage their game on the course.

Among the key data points aggregated from Shot Scope’s 100 million recorded shots include:

    • Under-club on approach shots … golfers are missing the green short 46% of the time.
    • Use less loft around the greens … Lower handicap players are using a wider range of clubs around the greens, while higher handicaps elect for lob wedge too often.
    • Scores are made with long and short putting … For higher handicap players, lag putting and getting inside 4ft is key to improvement, while lower handicaps have better rounds when holing out inside 6ft more often.
    • Golfers should avoid the sand … Fairways bunkers cost an average of 1.4 shots per hole and at first attempt the ball is left in a greenside bunker by a staggering 20% of golfers.
    • Across all abilities the smallest difference in performance, surprisingly is on fairways hit accuracy … lower handicap players don’t hit as many fairways as assumed, for they are better from the rough and better when out of position compared to higher handicaps.

Adds Hunter, “What makes Shot Scope data so important is that we track golfers of all handicap levels across 100 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Argentina. Thus, we have our finger on the pulse of game improvement worldwide and our GPS Smart Watch technology is showing measurable success among every type of player.”

As part of its Performance Tracking Platform, Shot Scope recently unveiled its 2021 Strokes Gained e-Book,which offers a complete benchmarking of traditional performance statistics, comparing golfers of handicap levels and how they perform in the following areas: Average Score to Par; Fairways in Regulation; Greens in Regulation; Short Game Up & Down; Average Putts Per round; and Average Number of Penalty Shots Per Round. The book, which is available for free download at https://shotscope.com/golf-ebooks/, includes a detailed analysis on the limitations of these traditional statistics, as well as an in-depth presentation on strokes gained and how to best evaluate data for marked game improvement.
