COVID-19 And The Game Of Golf

As we all struggle through these trying times, I have heard many ask if the game of golf is safe.  Well, I think that there are a few things to consider before you decide.

First.  The game of golf pretty much has social distancing built in.  It’s a game that you can play alone or with others and it’s a very rare occasion when you are standing closer than 6 feet from another player.  Now, you will have to make accommodations for riding in individual carts and for being on the tee box and putting surface.  Just make sure to keep at a safe distance.  If you’re unsure what that is, each of you just hold out your club and let the club heads touch.  That should be at least six feet.

Second.  You’re already wearing a glove.  Use it!  Not only to keep your forward hand from blistering or sweating onto the grip but to take out the flag, pick up your ball or even to drive your cart.  You may even benefit by buying a glove for your other hand or just using a few disposable gloves throughout the round.  Also,  wash your hands thoroughly (20 seconds at least) at each comfort stop or use an approved hand sanitizer throughout play.  When done, if you can, thoroughly sanitize your gloves by either washing or spraying with hot sudsy water or  an approved chemical agent.  If that doesn’t work, throw them out.  I know what you’re going to say, ‘gloves are expensive.’  Yeah, well so is a co-pay at the doctor’s office or emergency room!

Third.  Be aware of contact with people and surfaces before and after your round also.  Don’t take all the safety precautions on the course and then sit close at a table with your buddies at the 19th hole.  Be careful when you arrive and check in.  Try to see if it’s possible to do all the prerequisites such as paying and checking in online.

Fourth.  Wear a face covering from your point of arrival until you get back into your vehicle to leave.  This seems to be the number one recommendation. Check with the CDC guidelines and follow them.

Now, these are just my thoughts and opinions.  I’m not endorsing anyone to go in public and put themselves at risk. That’s your decision, not mine.   Again, check whatever the current CDC and local mandates happen to be at the time and place of play.

So, use good judgement, stay up on the local mandates and recommendations and most of all, use your head!

Stay safe and play well,

Joe

  1. Just about all of the things you point out is astonishingly appropriate and that makes me ponder why I hadn’t looked at this in this light previously. Your piece truly did turn the light on for me personally as far as this particular subject matter goes. Nevertheless at this time there is actually just one point I am not necessarily too comfortable with and whilst I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual core theme of your issue, allow me see just what the rest of the subscribers have to point out.Well done.
